Lag on US servers from Australia? Test this free before you pay a cent

Disclosure: This post contains an affiliate link; SavySaver earns a commission at no extra cost to you. We earn more on longer plans, so weigh our "annual" tip with that in mind. It only makes sense once the free trial has proven itself on your connection. See our disclosures.

Rubber-banding mid-pull. A lag spike the second you group up with mates on US servers. A disconnect just as the boss hits 5%.

Before you spend a cent on a fix, here's the SavySaver short version:

  1. Test it free first. No card needed.
  2. Only pay if it actually helps. And if it does, look closely at the annual plan, including what it renews at.
  3. If it doesn't help, walk away. The trial costs you nothing.

Prices and offers change (these were checked on 19 October 2026), so always check the current price on ExitLag's site before you buy.

What it actually does (in plain English)

ExitLag describes itself as "a routing optimiser for gaming", not a VPN. It looks for better paths between your PC and the game server. It also has a Network Analyzer that shows your latency and packet loss live, so you can see what's going on instead of guessing. ExitLag says it works with thousands of PC and mobile games, on Windows, iOS and Android.

The honest bit: how much it helps depends on your connection, your provider and the game server. On some setups you might not notice much at all. That's exactly why the free trial comes first.

Pay less in 3 steps

1. Test it free, no card needed. New users get 3 days free on desktop or 7 days on mobile, with no credit card required. The days run back to back, even on days you don't play, and the trial can't be extended. So start it on a weekend you'll actually be playing. One catch: if you create your account in the mobile app, the desktop trial doesn't apply. (ExitLag's trial FAQ)

Make the trial count: play your usual games on your usual server, and keep the Network Analyzer open so you can judge your latency and packet loss for yourself.

2. If it helped, compare monthly with annual. Here's what ExitLag's pricing page showed on 19 October 2026 (Solo plan, 1 player, prices in AUD):

PlanShown priceLabel on the page
MonthlyA$14.48/moNone
QuarterlyA$9.63/mo33% off
AnnualA$7.15/mo, billed upfront as A$85.7851% off, first billing cycle only

Read the renewal line. The 51% off on the annual plan applies to the first billing cycle only. After the first year it renews automatically at A$107.50 a year. For comparison, twelve months on the monthly plan would be A$173.76. Pop a reminder in your calendar before the renewal date if you're not sure you'll keep it. Prices are shown by region, so you may see a different currency.

About the 7-day money-back guarantee. Every plan lists a 7-day money-back guarantee. Under ExitLag's terms, it's a cooling-off period for first-time subscribers who ask within 7 days. Renewals aren't covered, and some payment methods (such as crypto) can't be refunded. Importantly, the terms say refunds aren't given just because the service doesn't help on your connection. That's another reason to use the free trial to test first. Check ExitLag's terms before you rely on it.

3. No difference? Don't pay. If the trial didn't help, skip it. That money's better spent on the game.

Two free ways to spend less on games

  • Never buy on day one. Most PC games drop in price during seasonal sales. Wishlist what you want and buy it then, unless it's a launch you really can't miss.
  • Check what you already pay for. Before buying a game or an upgrade edition, check whether a subscription you already have covers it. WoW Forever, for example, is included with a WoW subscription or game time. The upgrade packs are optional.

Good questions

Do I need ExitLag to play online games from Australia?
No, it's optional. Plenty of people play fine without it. The free trial is the easiest way to find out whether it makes a difference for you.

Will it lower my ping?
We won't promise a number. It depends on your connection and the server. Run the free trial and compare for yourself.

Is it a VPN?
ExitLag says it isn't. It describes itself as a routing optimiser for gaming.

Is the annual price always the same?
No. The 51% off applies to the annual plan's first billing cycle only. When we checked, that first year was A$85.78, renewing at A$107.50 a year. Offers change, so check ExitLag's pricing page before you sign up.

Can I get my money back if it doesn't help?
Not on that basis. ExitLag's 7-day money-back guarantee is for first-time subscribers, but its terms exclude refunds because the service doesn't work or help on your connection. Test with the free trial before you pay.
