Phone and NBN, without the lock-in trap
Most SIM-only and many NBN plans in Australia are month-to-month. Read the Critical Information Summary, keep your number, and check exit fees before you switch.
Do this today
Step 1
Open your current contract
Note the end date, any device balance, and early-exit fees.
Step 2
Read the CIS on the new plan
Speed (typical evening for NBN), data, coverage, and the ongoing price after any intro period.
Step 3
Switch and keep your number
The new provider ports the number. Complain to the TIO if something breaks.
Mobile
If you already own the phone, a month-to-month SIM-only plan is usually the flexible option. Intro prices often jump after three to twelve months — the CIS shows both numbers. Keep your number: the new provider ports it. Cancelling the old service first is how numbers get lost.
From 30 June 2026, mobile providers must publish coverage maps with the same four labels (good, moderate, basic, none).
NBN
NBN Co wholesale prices moved in 2026 and many retailers passed that on, especially on slower tiers. Compare typical evening speed (7–11pm), not the product name, and the ongoing monthly price after any discount period.
This page is not a live plan table. Read the CIS on the provider’s site before you apply.

Questions
Can I keep my mobile number?
Yes. Number porting is standard in Australia. Sign up with the new provider and give them the number to port. Do not cancel the old service first or you can lose the number.
What is a Critical Information Summary?
A CIS is the one-page document every telco must publish for a plan: price, data, typical speeds, contract length, and fees. Compare CIS documents, not ads.
Are NBN plans still on long contracts?
Month-to-month is now common across speed tiers. Always check the CIS: some providers still want 30 days’ written notice to cancel.
Who do I complain to?
First the provider. If that fails, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO). The ACCC handles misleading advertising.
