Compare two electricity plans by yearly cost
Type in the daily supply charge and usage rate from two plans and your yearly usage. You get the estimated yearly cost of each and the difference. The example numbers are placeholders, not real prices.
Before you start
- Find your yearly usage (kWh) on a recent bill — many bills show average daily use; multiply by 365.
- Get each plan's rates from its Basic Plan Information Document, or search plans on Energy Made Easy (Victoria: Victorian Energy Compare). Both are free government services.
- If you are on a standing offer in NSW, SE Queensland or SA, check the default market offer cap.

How it works
Yearly cost = (supply charge × 365 + usage rate × yearly kWh) ÷ 100, minus any guaranteed discount, all in dollars including GST as shown on the plan document. It ignores time-of-use, controlled load, demand charges, solar feed-in and concessions, so use it for flat-rate plans or as a rough check.

Questions
How do I compare electricity plans fairly?
Use the same yearly usage for both plans and include the daily supply charge, not just the usage rate. A low usage rate can be cancelled out by a high supply charge.
Where do I find a plan's rates?
Every plan has a Basic Plan Information Document with its supply charge and usage rates. Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare show them for free.
Does this include time-of-use or solar?
No. It is for flat-rate plans. For time-of-use, demand or solar plans, use Energy Made Easy or Victorian Energy Compare with your actual usage data.
